While the word ‘Umami’ sounds made up, it is something you actually come encounter on a very regular basis. It’s a flavour! You could say the current soy sauce market is quite saturated, with many different flavours available to the public. However, where standard soy sauces range simply from salt to very salty, Umami soy sauce actually enhances and intensifies the taste of a dish without losing its own identity.
